Town Celebrates Grand Opening of Gene Christian Memorial Facility

The Town of Mount Carmel celebrated an exciting milestone on Tuesday, November 3, with a grand opening and dedication ceremony at Mount Carmel Park, marking the completion of several major improvements and highlighting plans for an additional $2 million investment in the park's future.
The celebration featured the official opening of the Eugene “Gene” Christian Memorial Facility, a new public restroom facility, and the George Edison Pavilion, a covered gathering space for families, celebrations, and community events.
These improvements were made possible through a $400,000 grant awarded under the 2023 Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) program. The Town has also made additional investments in recreational infrastructure, including new playground equipment, swings, and pickleball courts.
Honoring a Legacy of Service
A special part of the celebration was the dedication of the Eugene “Gene” Christian Memorial Facility in recognition of Mr. Christian's longstanding service to Mount Carmel and Hawkins County.
Mr. Christian served 22 years on the Mount Carmel Board of Mayor and Aldermen, in addition to serving as a Hawkins County Commissioner and a member of the Hawkins County Gas Utility Board.
The dedication serves as a lasting tribute to his commitment to public service and the community he helped shape.
The ceremony included remarks from Mayor John Gibson, State Representative Timothy Hill, State Representative Gary Hicks, and Hawkins County Mayor David Linkous, along with recognition of the many individuals who contributed to the improvements.
$2 Million in New State Funding Will Transform the Park
The Town is also looking ahead to the next major phase of improvements following the recent award of $2 million in additional state grant funding.
The funding includes $1.5 million through the Local Parks and Recreation Fund and $500,000 through the GO Fund, with no local matching funds required.
The next phase will bring significant improvements to the park's existing basketball and baseball facilities, along with an exciting new addition—a splash pad!
These projects will further expand recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, creating new spaces for families to gather, play, and enjoy the outdoors.
"This is about much more than new buildings or playground equipment. It's about creating opportunities for families to spend time together, for children to play, and for our community to come together," said Town Manager Tyler Williams.
"When you look at where this park was just a few years ago, where it stands today, and what we have planned for the future, I think it's clear that we're building something special here in Mount Carmel."
Building for the Future
The Town extends its appreciation to the State of Tennessee, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Town employees, and everyone who has contributed to making these improvements possible.
These investments reflect Mount Carmel's continued commitment to enhancing public spaces, expanding recreational opportunities, and improving quality of life for residents of all ages.
And we're just getting started!
The Town looks forward to sharing additional updates as plans for the next phase of park improvements move forward.
