About Mount Carmel
Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Mount Carmel is located in upper-east Tennessee at the northeastern tip of Hawkins County. As one of five incorporated towns in the county—alongside Rogersville, Church Hill, Surgoinsville, and Bulls Gap—Mount Carmel offers a peaceful setting with easy access to nearby urban centers.
Just 80 miles northeast of Knoxville and adjacent to Kingsport, part of the Tri-Cities metropolitan area, our town is ideally situated for both quiet living and regional connectivity. We're also a short drive from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the popular tourist destinations of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
Our History
Mount Carmel’s story is one of community, resilience, and transformation. Officially incorporated in 1961, the town takes its name from the Mount Carmel Methodist Church, which once stood where Liberty Hill Cemetery is today. The name itself traces back to the biblical Mount Carmel in Palestine, a place known for its sacred significance and natural beauty.
Located in the scenic foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Mount Carmel has grown from a quiet rural settlement into a vibrant residential town. Its development over the decades has been shaped by its proximity to Kingsport and Church Hill, and its role within the broader Tri-Cities region.
Throughout the 20th century, Mount Carmel experienced both growth and challenges. Despite these hurdles, the community has remained strong, with ongoing discussions about regional collaboration and infrastructure improvements.
Mount Carmel continues to honor its past while embracing the future—a town built on strong values, community spirit, and a deep connection to its Appalachian roots.
